The Reason for the Season: Giving from the Heart

As we move through this season, we often hear the phrase “the reason for the season.” While it is commonly associated with celebration and tradition, at its heart this season is truly about love, gratitude, and giving. Giving is not only about what we place under a tree or the money we spend. True giving flows from the heart and reflects a spirit of compassion, humility, and awareness of others. When we give whether in big or small ways we create moments of hope, relief, and connection that can change someone’s day, and sometimes their life.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.2 Corinthians 9:7

Giving When We Are Able

For those who are blessed to give financially or materially, this season is a reminder to do so with joy and gratitude. If you have what you need and even some of what you desire you are truly fortunate. That is not something to take lightly. Scripture reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes from above. When we recognize that our provision comes from God’s grace, giving becomes an act of thanksgiving rather than obligation. We give because we are grateful, not because we feel pressured.

Giving when we are able is a way to reflect God’s love to others. It is a way of saying, “I see you. I care. You matter.”

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights. James 1:17

When You Cannot Give—Grace Is Still Present

If you are not in a position to give financially, that is okay. Seasons change, and there are times when simply sustaining ourselves and our families is an act of strength and faith. God does not measure generosity by the size of a gift, but by the condition of the heart. There is no shame in being in a season of receiving, healing, or rebuilding. Extend yourself grace and trust that your time to give will come.

“For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have." 2 Corinthians 8:12

Intangible Ways to Give That Matter Just as Much

Even when financial giving isn’t possible, there are countless intangible ways to give that are just as meaningful:

  • Offering your time to listen to someone who feels alone

  • Sharing encouragement or a kind word

  • Praying for someone in need

  • Volunteering your skills or presence

  • Showing patience, compassion, and empathy

  • Simply being available and present

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is reminding someone that they are not forgotten.

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Galatians 6:2

Gratitude Changes the Way We Give

When we pause to reflect on what we have—our health, our provision, our support systems we are reminded how blessed we truly are. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we’ve been entrusted with. If you have what you need and some of what you desire, take a moment to give thanks to God for His blessings and favor on your life.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus."

1 Thessalonians 5:18

A Season of Love, Not Pressure

This season is not about comparison, perfection, or excess. It is about love—love expressed through generosity, grace, and gratitude. Whether you are giving financially, offering intangible support, or simply learning to receive with humility, your role matters.

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

1 Corinthians 13:13

May this season remind us all that giving is not about what we have, but about how we love.
